KUNMANARA STEVENS

Kunmanara Stevens
c1919 - 2008
Out of respect for her family, and in accordance with Aboriginal custom, the artist's image has been removed until further notice.
Kunmanara was born in the bush at Makiti, the Tjala Minyma Tjukurpa (honey ant woman’s sacred place) in 1919. Her father was a Yangkunytjatjara man and her mother a Pitjantjara woman. When Kunmanara was a young woman she worked at Ernabella Mission milking the goats. “I was a hard worker at the mission, but it was good”. Her husband also worked at Ernabella chopping trees for building projects. Later they came to Nyapari, Kunmanara’s husband’s country.
